What machine shop software should actually do

"Machine shop software" is a category name that covers everything from a $40/month quoting tool to a six-figure ERP rollout. For a CNC job shop running 5 to 60 machines across two or three shifts, the useful definition is narrower: software that keeps the current state of every job accurate, at the machine, without extra office data entry.

That means a work order carries its routing with it — intake, materials, programming, machining, inspection, shipping — and each step is closed by the person who did the work, from a tablet on the floor. It means a machine going down is recorded as a categorized downtime event against a station, not as a text message that disappears. And it means the shift change produces a written record instead of a verbal one.

Everything else — scheduling, costing, OEE, quality metrics — is downstream of that data being right. Shops that buy the reporting layer before fixing the capture layer end up with fast, confident, wrong dashboards.

CNC shop management vs. a full ERP

An ERP is a business system: quotes, orders, purchasing, inventory valuation, invoicing, and the general ledger. A shop-floor execution system is an operations system: what is running right now, on which machine, by whom, and what is blocking it. The two answer different questions on different clocks — the ERP is correct as of last night's entries, the floor system is correct as of the last routing step closed.

JobLine is the second one. It does not do your accounting and does not want to. If you are still deciding which category you need, the MES vs. ERP breakdown covers the tradeoffs, and Job Shop ERP covers where the overlap really is.

Works alongside your ERP or QuickBooks

A shop can keep JobBOSS, E2, ProShop, Global Shop, or QuickBooks for financial work and evaluate JobLine as a separate floor workflow. Nothing has to be migrated for that to work: import open jobs as CSV, stand up your work centers, and run both systems in parallel until the shop trusts the new one. Read the JobBOSS alternative write-up for what that transition looks like week by week.

For AS9100 and ISO 9001 shops, the coexistence argument gets stronger, not weaker. Your registrar cares that status changes are attributable and time-stamped. JobLine records who closed each routing step, when, at which station, and what quantity was completed, scrapped, or sent to rework — a cleaner audit trail than a traveler with initials in the margin, and it does not require touching a validated ERP configuration.
